Dutch Oven Cooking

The Dutch Oven allows one to really enhance the quality of ones menu while canoe tripping. Things like muffin cakes, chocolate cakes, croissants, bannock breads and cinammon rolls can create wonderful smells around camp, not to mention good eating. Ensuring that people get enough to eat to replenish the energy they expend while being active all day is easier when food is fresh and tastes wonderful. The Dutch Oven makes this a reality.

The students will research a recipe and use the dutch oven to make it. The students of the class will sample the food and provide their feedback. The cooks will then share their recipe on the comment section to this post, along with a brief description of the preparing, cooking and final product of the recipe.

Mark and I were partners for the Dutch Oven Cooking. We picked this recipe off of the Dutch Oven Dude website because it seemed very tasty. I started getting thc coals hot during lunch which turned out to be very frustering. However, we trucked right on and got it done. We then placed our chicken and mix in the dutch oven and placed 13 coals on top and 6 on the bottom. After about 30 minutes you could really started smell the food and it smelt yummy. It took about an hour to cook and we then served out food. The class seemed to really enjoy it. If we were to change somthing, I think I should have been a little more patient and keep on trying with the coals because it just didn't seem to help when I got frustered. I also would take in consideration of classmates or teachers food preference, I could have changed the mushroom soup to another type of creamy soup. Overall it turned out really well and I would make this on a camping trip.

Ingredients: 1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of celery soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
2 cups white rice
1/2 cup water
1 cut up chicken or 4 breasts
1/2 pkg dry onion soup mix
Preheat dutch oven to 325 degrees.
Pour 3 soups, rice, and water into D.O.
Arrange chicken pieces on top of rice.
Sprinkle onion soup mix on top.
Cook for 1 hour.

"Steak Dinner"
http://www.justdutchovenrecipes.com/dut-0096968.html

Alek and I decided to go with the steak dinner simply because putting Me, Alek, and Steak Dinner all in one room is the best anyone could ever ask for. We started by gathering wood for the fire, and being the contributers that we are, we decided to pull out the dead burr bushes at the old smoker's pit. Once our coals were hot enough and we started cooking, we realized it would take more coals than expected so we made a new fire and got more coals. By this point, the smoker's pit looked like a summer wonderland. It didn't take long for the smell of our delicious steak to tease us but luckily we left it to go to DQ (where some people complained they could still not escape the smell). When we returned, everyone got quite a good portion and I believe everyone loved them. It was quite the meal and some people actually thought God made it, but thats just silly because there was two gods working that day.

2 lb Round Or Sirloin Steak
4 lg Potatoes
4 Carrots
1 lg Onion
2 Sticks celery
2 c Tomato juice
1 ts Salt
1 tb Sugar
4 tb Minute tapioca

Cut the steak into pieces and brown in a 12 inch Dutch Oven with a small amount of oil. Drain off excess oil and add sliced carrots, celery, onion and potatoes cut into chunks. Mix the tomato juice, salt sugar and tapioca and pour over the meat and vegetables. Bake over medium coals for approx. 1 1/2 hour or until the meat is tender
